    Mattie King Davis Art Gallery welcomes trio of artists and friends | Entertainment

    BEAUFORT — The Mattie King Davis Art Gallery will host a free show Friday, Dec. 3 from 4:30 until 6 p.m. featuring the work of longtime friends, Jimmy Craig Womble, Lisa Tuchek and Mandy Johnson.     Art critic Dave Hickey, known for book ‘Air Guitar’, dies | Entertainment

    Dave Hickey, a prominent American art critic whose essays covered topics ranging from Siegfried & Roy to Norman Rockwell, has died. His books, including “The Invisible Dragon: Essays on Beauty” (1993) and “Air Guitar: Essays on Art & Democracy” (1997), won him legions of fans beyond the art world experts. His stylish prose, brash criticism of taste-making institutions like museums and universities and equal embrace of works considered both high- and low-brow left a lasting influence on a generation of artists and critics. “There is no one like him.     Gibbons art book released | Arts & Entertainment

    The newly released art book, “Michael Gibbons – Painting in Nature,” carries a dedication by Brian Ferriso, executive director and chief curator of the Portland Art Museum. “The power of a great artist is to help us see more of what is directly in front of us and in doing so provide a visual residue that we carry throughout our daily lives,” he wrote. The new book, released earlier this month at the late artist’s gallery and the Yaquina River Museum of Art, both in Toledo, fulfills that mission — and portrays the power of Gibbons’ art.     University of Notre Dame presents the play ‘This is Modern Art’

    SOUTH BEND — The University of Notre Dame’s department of film, television and theater presents “This Is Modern Art” from Nov. 10 to 14 at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. Written by Idris Goodwin and Kevin Coval and based on real events, the play follows a crew of Chicago graffiti artists as they display their work at one of the city’s most venerable cultural institutions — the Art Institute of Chicago.     Halifax Art Festival gets new layout in Daytona | Arts & Entertainment

    The 59th annual Halifax Art Festival will be Nov. 6-7 with a new layout. The City of Daytona Beach has redesigned Beach Street, reducing it from four lanes to two lanes. The median of palm trees remains. For more space, the festival will be including City Island as well as Beach Street with Magnolia Avenue providing artists and shoppers with a centralized new layout. The festival is the second oldest continuously presented one in Florida. It features a unique blend of fine arts, crafts, music, food and fun. Admission and parking are free.
