Arguments on Texas Abortion Law to be Heard by Supreme Court Justices

[Follow our live coverage of the Supreme Court’s hearing on the Texas Abortion Law.] WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court is hearing arguments on Monday in challenges to a Texas law that has sharply curtailed abortions in the state. The law, which went into effect on Sept. 1 after the court declined to block it in a bitterly divided 5-to-4 decision, was drafted to evade review in federal court, a goal the state has so far achieved. The law, which bans most abortions after about six weeks and includes no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, has caused

Supreme Court leaves Texas abortion ban in place, agrees to take up legal battle over law

Washington — The Supreme Court on Friday said it will take up this term a legal battle over a Texas law that bans most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, adding a second case involving abortion to its docket in what is already a blockbuster term. The abortion ban, known as S.B. 8, will remain in place while the Supreme Court considers the cases. There’s a fourth law included in the lawsuit filed in August, to prohibit health insurance plans sold in the federal exchange in Montana from covering abortion care, but it’s not part of the preliminary injunction request. “This is an important and hard-fought victory. We’re thrilled that the Montana district court preliminarily blocked

The legal mind behind America’s most extreme abortion law | Abortion

At the center of the extreme Texas law that bans nearly all abortion care in the second largest state in the US lies a novel legal provision that allows any private citizen to act as vigilantes and sue an abortion provider or anyone who “aids or abets” the procedure. While a federal judge temporarily blocked Senate Bill 8 on Wednesday, after 36 days in effect, the fifth circuit court of appeals temporarily restored the law late Friday. In a lawsuit against the measure, the US Department of Justice recently called Senate Bill 8 an “unprecedented scheme” designed with the specific
