    Bears travel to Claxton Friday night to face Tigers | Sports

    Pierce County’s season-opening four-game road trip continues in Claxton Friday night. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s third-ranked Bears (1-1) are coming off a 25-0 beating of Class 5A Wayne County in Jesup. Claxton’s lone game was a 27-6 setback in the “Pecan Grove” at the hands of PCHS regionmate Tattnall County two weeks ago. Pierce County has won the last four meetings against Claxton to take a 6-3 series advantage. PCHS has outscored the Tigers 177-65 (19.7 to 7.2) in the all-time series. During the 1982 and 1983 seasons, PCHS and the Tigers split four games. The Bears swept Claxton 11-6 and

    Goslings travel to face Janesville Craig in conference opener | Local Sports

    Watertown’s football team brings a 1-1 record into a Badger-Large conference matchup with Janesville Craig on Friday at Monterey Stadium. The Goslings bounced back from a 35-7 loss to Brookfield East in the opener with a 27-7 win over Reedsburg last Friday. Craig lost to Oconomowoc 47-7 in the opener, then lost to Madison Memorial 7-6 in Week 2.     Christian Pulisic to miss USMNT’s World Cup qualifier vs. El Salvador; USA goalkeeper Zack Steffen also out

    The United States men’s national team will be without star playmaker Christian Pulisic and starting goalkeeper Zack Steffen for their opening World Cup qualifying match on Thursday. The team kicks off its Concacaf qualifying campaign for the 2022 FIFA World Cup against El Salvador. Pulisic, who tested positive for COVID before the international window, did not travel with the team to San Salvador for Thursday’s clash, a 10:05 p.m. ET kickoff at Estadio Cuscatlan on CBS Sports Network and Paramount+.     Boys & Girls Club offering travel basketball, soccer leagues | Sports

    The Boys & Girls Club is offering travel basketball and fall soccer leagues. The BGC Thunder, which was started earlier this year to give girls basketball players a chance to compete locally over the offseason, will have tryouts on Sept. 25 at the Shelbyville Boys & Girls Club. For girls in grades 9-11, tryouts will be from 10 a.m. to approximately noon. For girls in grades 6-8, tryouts will begin at noon.     English cricket leaders confident about Ashes going ahead

    LONDON (AP) — English cricket leaders are “very confident” the upcoming Ashes series will go ahead as planned despite ongoing negotiations over COVID-related travel restrictions. England’s players are concerned about the possibility of families being unable to join them on the trip given Australia’s tight border controls, as well as the prospect of lengthy quarantines and restrictive bubble environments. Talks involving the Professional Cricketers’ Association have been ongoing for some time and while Tom Harrison, chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board, acknowledged on Thursday there are plenty of complications before a final green light could be given,
